Excavation Along the Required Line and Grade

ASRE provides trenching for residential and commercial projects in Allentown and across the Lehigh Valley. Trenches serve water and sewer lines, drainage pipes, plumbing runs, footings and septic system lines. The job starts with the required route, depth and grade, plus the surrounding pavement and structures affected by digging.

A trench is part of a larger installation. Its route must work with the line or footing going into it, and the removal and restoration limits need to be clear. ASRE also installs sewer and water lines and septic systems. Tell us whether you need excavation only or installation work as well. If another trade will install the plumbing, bring their layout and requirements to the discussion before the crew opens the ground.

Trenching for Lines, Drains and Footings

Trenching for Lines, Drains and Footings

ASRE confirms the trench requirements and related removal work for the installation being planned.

  • Trenches for new water line installation and replacement
  • Excavation along sewer line installation and repair routes
  • Drainage pipe trenches laid out for the required grade
  • Plumbing trenches within new commercial buildout work areas
  • Excavation for footings and related foundation work
  • Trenching along the routes of septic system lines
  • Backfilling and compaction after the line work is complete

How it works

Planning the Dig and the Work After It

  1. 01

    Establish the installation requirements

Identify the line, pipe or footing and provide the required route and elevations. The trench should support the installation design so the next trade can start without rework.

  2. 02

    Discuss utilities and access

In Pennsylvania, PA One Call 811 must be contacted before digging. Also discuss private lines, building access and any pavement or interior slab sections along the route so it is clear what needs to be removed.

  3. 03

    Mark the work limits

Review where the trench begins and ends and which nearby surfaces remain. Coordinate the excavation with the trade installing the line, including when the open trench is needed for its work.

  4. 04

    Excavate for the planned line

ASRE digs the trench for the agreed route, depth and grade. Ground conditions and nearby structures matter to excavation planning, and an open trench is a work area that should stay separated from normal property use.

  5. 05

    Backfill and plan surface restoration

Backfilling and compaction follow the completed line work. Discuss replacement concrete or other surface work separately so you know whether the estimate stops at the filled trench or includes a finished walking or driving surface.

For Residential Utilities and Commercial Buildouts

For Residential Utilities and Commercial Buildouts

Trenching fits homeowners installing or replacing service lines, builders preparing footings and commercial teams opening routes for plumbing or drainage. An interior buildout differs from a trench across a yard because the slab and building access become part of the work discussion. ASRE serves Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Emmaus, Macungie, Whitehall and surrounding Lehigh Valley areas. Property owners should identify who supplies the installation requirements and who handles the work after excavation. Facility managers should also explain occupied areas, deliveries and the surfaces that need to remain usable during the project.

Project example

Plumbing Trenching for a Sport Clips Buildout

ASRE dug plumbing trenches for a Sport Clips location buildout. This commercial project's trenching prepared the site for the next stage of construction. ASRE also offers sewer and water line installation, septic installation and concrete removal. Those related services matter when a trench route passes through a slab or when the project includes more than digging. Discuss the specific installation and restoration work you need during your estimate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Need something else? Give us a call.

Do you install the line as well as dig the trench?

ASRE installs sewer and water lines and septic systems in addition to providing trenching. Other trench projects involve excavation for plumbing or another contractor's installation. Explain the system and the work you need when requesting an estimate. The estimate should distinguish digging, line installation, backfilling and surface restoration instead of treating them as one general service.

How should 811 utility marking be arranged before excavation?

PA One Call 811 must be contacted before digging in Pennsylvania. Discuss the notification and utility-marking requirements with the contractor before excavation begins. Public utility marks do not necessarily identify every private line on a property, so share what you know about private services as well. Utility coordination belongs in the work plan, not as an afterthought when the trench is already open.

Can you trench through an existing concrete slab?

ASRE removes interior slab sections for plumbing work and provides saw-cutting, breaking and hauling of concrete. If the route crosses a slab, identify the removal boundaries and the sections staying in place. Discuss trenching and replacement concrete together. An excavation-only estimate should not be assumed to include cutting the slab or pouring a finished replacement afterward.

What determines trench depth?

The installation design, line requirements, grade and site conditions determine the trench depth. There is no single depth suitable for every water, sewer, drainage or footing job. Provide drawings or requirements from the responsible installer when available. ASRE's estimate should reflect the trench dimensions your installation needs.

Is backfilling the same as restoring the surface?

No. Backfilling places material back into the trench, and compaction prepares it to support the area above. Surface restoration is the next task, such as replacing a concrete slab or walkway. ASRE provides concrete services, but those need to be included in the agreed work. Ask what condition the work area will be left in after excavation and line installation.
