Shape the Ground Around Drainage and Use
ASRE provides grading and resloping for homes and commercial properties in Allentown and the Lehigh Valley. Work includes reshaping ground around buildings, entryways, patios and retaining walls, plus grading for new construction and concrete bases. The starting point is the existing elevation and where water needs to travel.
Water collecting beside a patio or running toward a lower-level door is a reason to review the surrounding grade. Raising one patch of soil without considering the rest of the site sometimes moves the problem elsewhere. ASRE looks at grading alongside walls, drainage and the surfaces you plan to install. Describe what happens during rainfall and show the wet areas at your site visit. Photos of runoff help explain conditions that are not visible on a dry day.

Grading Work for Existing and New Sites
The work depends on the ground you have and the elevations the project needs.
- Regrading yards where the existing slope directs water toward buildings
- Rough grading for the layout of new construction
- Finish grading to connect the planned site elevations
- Resloping ground around patios, retaining walls and entryways
- Grading stone base before slabs and parking surfaces
- Shaping drainage as part of retaining wall work
- Preparing ground elevations for connected walkways and access areas
How it works
How Your Grading Plan Takes Shape
- 01
Trace the water path
Show us where runoff begins, where it collects and which entry or surface is affected. Look beyond the wet spot itself because the source might be higher on the property.
- 02
Review fixed elevations
Building doors, existing pavement and walls set limits on how the ground is reshaped. Discuss the surfaces and structures staying in place before deciding which surrounding areas need a change in grade.
- 03
Define the connected work
Some projects need grading alone; others require retaining wall work, drainage or removal of an existing surface. Identify those tasks in the estimate so the proposed slope is workable within the rest of the project.
- 04
Reshape and prepare
ASRE performs the agreed grading and related base work around the project layout. Compaction matters where soil or stone supports construction, and the intended surface determines the preparation required.
- 05
Review the final ground slope
Check the shaped area against the intended drainage path and the access routes you need. Clarify what surface work follows, since grading ground is a different job from installing concrete, walls or a complete finished yard.

For Homes With Runoff Problems and Commercial Builds
Homeowners call for grading when a doorway sits low, water runs toward the house or a patio project needs different elevations. Commercial owners and builders need grading tied to slabs, parking surfaces, walkways and site redevelopment. ASRE handles both types of work across Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Emmaus, Macungie, Whitehall and surrounding areas. Bring a specific concern or a construction plan to the estimate. Grading changes the ground level and slope. A site review helps determine whether it will address your drainage or basement moisture problem.
Project example
A Lower-Level Entry Regraded for Natural Drainage
At a Lehigh Valley home, ASRE rebuilt an entry area where failing retaining walls and a low-point grading problem directed water toward the doorway. The work included selective demolition, new footers and a rebuilt retaining wall system. ASRE regraded the surrounding ground so water moved away from the entry naturally without relying on traditional piping. Portions of the roof structure were reused, and lower-level vehicle access was maintained within the rebuild. The grade change was part of a connected wall and entry project.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Need something else? Give us a call.
How do I know whether I need grading or a drain?
Start with where the water comes from and where it has a workable outlet. Some sites need a change in slope, others need drainage work, and some require both. ASRE's lower-level entry project used natural drainage regrading, but that approach does not apply to every property. Ask for a site review to help identify the source of the water and the right approach.
Can grading address water running toward my doorway?
Resloping the surrounding ground is one possible part of the work when the doorway sits at a low point. Existing pavement, retaining walls and building elevations affect the options. ASRE has completed an entry rebuild with natural drainage regrading. Ask for a property review so your estimate reflects the site conditions, proposed grade changes and related construction needed.
What is rough grading compared with finish grading?
Rough grading establishes the general shape and elevations needed for construction. Finish grading refines those elevations around the intended surfaces and site layout. The terms describe stages of earthwork, not a complete installation of lawn, pavement or drainage. Tell ASRE what work follows and whether the request is for initial site shaping, final preparation or correction around an existing feature.
Do retaining walls and grading need to be planned together?
Yes, when the wall supports an elevation change or borders the area being reshaped. The wall position and the surrounding grade affect each other, along with access and drainage. ASRE handles retaining walls and grading, and its lower-level entry project combined both. Discuss the full area before treating wall replacement and adjacent soil work as unrelated projects.
Can you grade the base for a concrete surface?
ASRE grades stone base for slabs and parking areas and also pours residential and commercial concrete. A compacted, properly shaped base matters because the concrete depends on what supports it. Identify the intended use and finished elevation during the estimate. If another contractor will place the concrete, bring their preparation requirements into the grading discussion.
